Esophagectomy Surgery

An esophagectomy is a surgical procedure in which part of another organ, usually the stomach, is used to reconstruct the esophagus, the swallowing tube that runs between your mouth and stomach, after part of it has been removed. When aggressive precancerous cells are present in Barrett's esophagus, esophagectomy is a common treatment for advanced esophageal cancer. It is also occasionally used in this situation. In cases of noncancerous conditions where previous attempts to preserve the esophagus have failed—such as end-stage achalasia or strictures—or following ingestion of something that harms the esophageal lining, an esophagectomy may also be advised. The primary surgical procedure for esophageal cancer is esophagectomy. Either the cancer is removed, or the symptoms are reduced. An incision is made in the neck, chest, or abdomen, and the surgeon removes all or part of the esophagus during an open esophagectomy. Another organ is used to replace the esophagus; this is usually the stomach, but it can also occasionally be the small or large intestine.
