You will be given a general anesthetic prior to the procedure, which will put you to sleep and numb any sensations. The two main treatments for pancreatic cancer are open surgery and keyhole (laparoscopic or robotic) surgery. One large incision is made in the abdomen during open surgery. Several tiny incisions are made in the abdomen during keyhole surgery. One of the holes is filled with a long tube that has a camera attached at the end of it. The camera guides the surgeon as they enter tools through the remaining holes to complete the process. Similar methods are used in robotic surgery, but a computer controls the instruments. Not everyone is a candidate for keyhole surgery.
