Before the procedure, a general anesthetic will be administered to you, putting you to sleep and blocking all sensations. The two main treatments for pancreatic cancer are open surgery and keyhole (laparoscopic or robotic) surgery. During open surgery, one sizable cut (incision) is made in the abdomen. In the course of keyhole surgery, the abdomen receives a number of small incisions. A lengthy tube with a camera on the end is inserted into one of the holes. As they insert tools through the other holes to perform the procedure, the surgeon is guided by the camera. Robotic surgery uses similar techniques, but the tools are managed by a computer. Keyhole surgery is not appropriate for everyone.
