A doctor may perform a laparoscopy to examine the pelvis and abdomen (belly). A laparoscope, a short, flexible tube with a light and a tiny camera on the end, is used for this. The abdominal wall is cut in a small spot near the navel to insert the tube (belly button). To insert additional instruments, a second or third incision may be made in a different area of the belly. Keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery are other names for laparoscopy. This examination is used to examine an abnormal area seen on an imaging test or to look for the causes of issues like pelvic pain (such as a tumor in the pelvis). Lymph nodes in the pelvis or abdomen can be removed surgically or had a biopsy taken of them using laparoscopy. For people with gynecologic cancers, it is frequently used (cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, and endometrial cancer). Small gynecologic cancers (ovarian, endometrial, and cervical) as well as cancers of the colon or kidney can be treated with laparoscopy.
