Laparoscopy is a type of surgery where the incisions are smaller than you might expect. The procedure is named after the laparoscope, a thin instrument with a small video camera and a light at the tip. When the surgeon inserts it through a small incision in your body, they can watch a video monitor and see what's going on inside you. Without these tools, they would have had to drill a much larger hole. Thanks to special tools, even your surgeon will not have to enter your body. It also means fewer cuts. Prior to the advent of this system, a surgeon operating on a patient's abdomen had to make an incision 6 to 12 inches long. It gave them enough space to see what they were doing and get whatever they needed to work. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes several small incisions. Usually, the length of each does not exceed half an inch. (This is why it is sometimes called keyhole surgery.) A tube is inserted into each hole through which the camera and surgical instruments pass. The surgeon then performs the operation.
