An anal fistula is a very common problem. The patient develops a pus discharging opening adjacent to the anal opening. An anal fistula commonly starts with a perianal abscess, in which a pus-filled cavity develops adjacent to the anal canal, which either bursts on its own or is drained surgically. After drainage of the pus and gradual healing, well-defined pus discharging tract remains known as an anal fistula.
